Connected Learning 4 RefugeesProviding Digital Pathways to Higher Education for Refugees Worldwide

The Challenge

With over 25 million refugees displaced by conflict and persecution as of 2018, access to higher education remains out of reach for most. The Connected Learning in Crisis Consortium (CLCC) set out to change that. Originally launched under the guidance of the University of Geneva, and later supported by Arizona State University, the CLCC needed a digital platform that could serve as both a public resource and an operational tool for global partners—one capable of bridging complex academic, cultural, and technological divides.

What began as a simple static website soon required transformation into a dynamic digital ecosystem. The consortium needed a centralized, easy-to-use Playbook—a global clearinghouse where educators, institutions, and humanitarian organizations could share case studies, tools, and best practices for delivering higher education in fragile and low-resource contexts. Importantly, the platform had to balance decentralized contributions with a unified voice, allowing participation from a diverse, international coalition.

Our Approach

DatAchieve Digital worked alongside CLCC partners spanning multiple continents to develop an integrated digital solution. Under the initial direction of the University of Geneva and later the University of Arizona, we:

  • Facilitated discovery workshops across time zones and institutions to align goals.
  • Designed and built a robust digital Playbook—a searchable, filterable repository for stories, case studies, and resources.
  • Developed a custom dashboard to allow partners and users to submit and manage content in real-time.
  • Streamlined UX to accommodate low-bandwidth environments while ensuring accessibility and global usability.
  • Maintained flexibility through two major iterations of the site—first with Geneva and later with Arizona—ensuring continuity while responding to evolving needs.

Throughout, we navigated a wide range of stakeholder expectations and technical challenges, harmonizing feedback and maintaining timelines, while delivering tools that would support the CLCC’s evolving global mission.

A Support Hub for Displaced Students

The CLCC provides educational resources and support to refugees around the world. DatAchieve Digital worked with CLCC to develop a new website, including an interactive clearinghouse that could enable members and the public to share information and resources online.
