How Did You Spend Summer Vacation?
While you were relaxing at the beach many of your competitors were burning the midnight oil. Here are five things smart businesses were doing to stay on top of a changing web.
1.They were preparing for the fall.
September and October see more web traffic than any other time of the year. As we return from vacation and kids head off to school web searches for products and services quickly increase. Smart businesses were making sure that their websites and digital marketing were on-message and on-target because, hey—winter is coming.
2. They were securing their websites.
As the Internet continues to evolve and security challenges grow, Google is taking steps that will soon affect websites using older technology and sites that are not properly secured. Google recently began giving ranking preference to websites that use an SSL certificate and the https protocol. These sites are recognizable by the green “lock” icon shown in the address bar. Google will soon begin marking websites that are not secured with a red warning label in the search results.
3. They were implementing accessibility.
Federal ADA regulations regarding website accessibility are increasingly being enforced. The Justice Department has determined that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability, also applies to websites. Smart businesses were making their websites accessible because it’s good business—and it’s the law.
4. They were becoming less annoying.
Beginning in January 2017, Google will begin punishing websites that use popups on homepages. Smart businesses are ditching the intrusive hype in favor of meaningful content that connects with visitors.
5. They were looking for help.
