There was an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal recently entitled Why Restaurant Automation Is on the Menu. Applebee’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chili’s, Panera, Olive Garden and other restaurants are starting to introduce touch-screen ordering, directly from the table. The author writes about how the technology is enabling restaurants to cut costs and increase efficiency, but it’s not just about the money. The biggest reason is the need to appeal to customers who increasingly just don’t want to talk.
Talking face-to-face is so last century.
It reminded me of a conversation with, well, a comment, okay—maybe it was a text, from my twenty-something daughter. She and her friends were visiting a local nightspot when a young man came up and introduced himself. “What a creeper,” she said. “Who does that?” Her mother and I looked at one another and said, “Well, that’s actually why we used to go out.”
“So, Robby, what do you like that’s on the menu?”
